Born in Vancouver, Canada, Zoya subsequently spent her early childhood in Germany and at the age of eight, moved with her parents to Kingston, Jamaica. Her time spent at the Institute of Jamaica’s National Gallery and at drawing classes as a teenager served as an early source of artistic inspiration for Zoya.

Zoya Taylor is a self-taught artist. Growing up between Germany, Jamaica and Canada, the young Zoya spent hours in drawing classes and visiting galleries. After a career as an academic in the social sciences she started painting full-time in 2000 and has been exhibiting across Europe, the United States, Canada and Jamaica. In 2009, she was a recipient of the President’s Award in the Florence Biennale.

I bring my own personal outsiderness to my paintings. This is the result of growing up in various cultures and of being visibly different in a predominantly white society.
