His naturalistic panel paintings, mostly portraits and religious subjects, made extensive use of disguised religious symbols.
In the most substantial early source on him, a 1454 biography by the Genoese humanist Bartolomeo Facio (De viris illustribus), Jan van Eyck was named "the leading painter" of his day.
