Description: Joos van Cleve (1485-1541)-attributed, Portrait Guillaume II de Croy (1458-1521) holding a flower, in fur and richt decorated coat with chain of the Golden Vleece and a black hat, in front of a green background; oil on oak panel.
Van Cleve became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1551, in the same year as Pieter Brueghel the Elder, and married Maria de Greve five years later. She bore him four sons, all of whom also became painters. Several art historians have attributed van Cleve's specialisation in genre scenes to the fact that he never travelled to Italy.
Missouri-born, Missouri-bred. Van Cleve brings to his audience a part of himself with each piece he creates. His passion, his experiences and his perspective. This results in artwork that combines his love and admiration for the Impressionist Period with his persistent goal of keeping his mind fresh and himself on his toes.
