You have to systematically create confusion, it sets creativity free. Everything that is contradictory creates life.

Dear BAG Members,

The Members’ Exhibition 2011 completed another very successful BAG year.

We had over 200 entries this year. The quality of the work was of an exceptional standard. We would like to thank Pam Wragg and Geoff Dupree who were our judges this year. We also want to thank our Awards Sponsors: Bendigo Bank, Melbourne Artists’ Supplies, Hampton Art Supplies, Walkers Ceramics, and the Humphery and Hutchison families for their generosity. It was also fantastic to see so many junior entrants. We congratulate all of the winners.

Kay Bunnett Award for Painting

Equal Winners:

Jennifer Buntine “Briars”

Judge’s comments: “Fine observation of space and atmosphere in an ordinary, everyday situation; the simple inappropriateness of the technique leads to a telling image.”

David Ikin “Blues for Green”

Judge’s comments: “Good balance of colours, spaciousness, transparency and energy generating a joyous world.”

Inez Hutchison Encouragement Award

Winner: Neil Watson “Preparing for the Race”

Judge’s comments: “Gentle and affectionate observation and technique make for a clear and memorable image.”

Bendigo Bank Best Watercolour Award

Winner: Gaye Beyers “Winterlight”

Judge’s comments: “Strong, simple image which captures the intended mood completely.”

Hampton Art Supplies Award for Drawing

WinnerRebecca Robinson “Brighton Town Hall”

Judge’s comments: “Intensely observed and rendered, making a strongly expressive image.”

Melbourne Artists’ Supplies Class Award

Winner: Lynette King “Uluru”

Judge’s comments: “Beautifully painted work of a difficult, elusive subject. Original and appropriate technical solution to represent the dry grass, bushes and bare ground as well as the very deep receding distance.”

Highly Commended in Painting Section

David Ikin and Lee Goller

Community Carers’ Anonymous Award

Winner: Patricia Tandy ”Warrum Bungles”

Highly Commended: Stella Limberis and Veronica Robinson

Walkers Ceramics and Beaumaris Art Group 3 Dimensional Painting and Relief Award Winner: Valerie Una Stow ”My Day in Blue”

Highly Commended: Diane Pearce and Anda Roche

James & Nicky Humphery Sculpture Award

Winner: Mary Currin Clarke ”Fiddleback”

Highly Commended: John McKee

James & Nicky Humphery Ceramic Award

Winner: Carmen Skrobonja ”Bird Tree”

Highly Commended: Magdalena Dmowska and John McKee

Judge’s comment: “Traditionally, sculpture is about 3 dimensional form and space. Today there are no boundaries. Ultimately the artist selects the subject he feels can best carry his message and our response to the work is intuitive.

When viewing the work I want to get the excitement, the conflict, the feeling that during the creation something new was discovered by the artist and incorporated into the work…

Art is learned from art and not art theory. Each student of art must start at the beginning. All must be learnt afresh by each generation. Drawing has to be learned, materials and tools have to be mastered with skill and care…Thank you.”

Congratulations to Dominique Taylor, Asher Kardashan, Tara Baker, Lucy Green and Mia Derham who won encouragement awards in the Junior Section.

Congratulations to Hugh Foster and Magdalena Dmowska who won the People’s Choice Award ex aequo.

Coralie Lewis curated the Members’ Exhibition and along with her team of volunteer helpers did a wonderful job with the organisation, hanging, cataloguing and smooth running of the whole exhibition. Thank you Coralie for a job well done and many, many thanks to all who helped you.

Libby Smith and her team of helpers did a great job coordinating the Members’ Market and running the sausage sizzle.

Our annual Members’ Lunch was a wonderful success with around 40 members enjoying a picnic in the park. Great atmosphere, relaxed, low key event; friends and colleagues sharing food and wine on a beautiful sunny day.

New Classes

In 2012 we are going to offer two new classes. Peter McGann will be running a Japanese Printmaking Class on Wednesday mornings 10am - 12pm. Pam Wragg has offered to run a Sculpture class in 2012.

It is a great honour for us to have experienced artists like Peter and Pam teaching at BAG and I am confident their classes will attract a lot of interest from Members.

Please register your interest as soon as possible.

Juliette Wegdam will not be teaching in term 1 but will be back in Term 2. We have a new tutor Jennifer Clarke who will take over Juliette’s class in Term 1.

Volunteering

Our office has been run for the last 7 months by Volunteers – these girls have made sure everything has run efficiently. Thank you so much to Margaret Richards, Libby Smith, Magdalena Dmowska, Di Pearce, Geri Colson, Suzanne Kaldor and Cheryl Taylor.

Please remember Committee positions are also voluntary and unpaid.

Thanks to Betty Jennings and Jill Haertel who have been keeping our kitchens sparkling clean and making sure there is fresh milk in the fridge.

Hugh Foster, David Ikin and John Thompson have been a wonderful help with maintenance – Hugh fixed all the broken easels and David and John did a great job of painting the front door and under the windows. Thanks guys.

How can you help?

Volunteering is a core part of organizations like BAG and we need many more of you to step forward.  Please if you have been thinking about Volunteering now is the time.
